Show Review

Charlie:

Hey there! Well, ok, here's a review of the Whisky A GO GO show (LA 2/26):

The show was scheduled to start at 8 o'clock, and we got there about 7:30. Not too many people there, they all showed up later like true Angelenos. If you've never been inside the Whiskey, it's a cool place. There are two bars, one upstairs and one downstairs. Downstairs, the bar is in the back and there's a lot of crowd room in the middle of the floor. The stage itself is in the corner of the room about chest height. There's also a stairway that leads directly onto the stage from the upstairs area, where the dressing room is located. We hung out upstairs where all the tables were, because there's no way I would have been able to stay on my feet for the opening acts to do their sets. The first band to come out was all right, I can't remember their name, but I'm pretty sure it was their first time opening for Jerry. The first word in their name was Seventh. The sound level at the Whiskey was pretty loud, but also clear, so you didn't lose anything. Next up was Swarm, who sounded pretty good, their singer has one heck of a voice. He's a pretty flamboyant guy, very energetic. They put on a good 6 song set. After Swarm, was Comes With The Fall. They played a great set too, but everyone was really waiting for the main event. By the time CWTF had finished, the place was packed. We went downstairs in order to get a good spot, and managed to get pretty close to the stage. Everyone was pretty excited and they were really looking forward to Jerry coming out, but the only problem was, the crew took an eternity setting up all the equipment, so there was about a half hour delay. But by the time they were done, everyone had gotten themselves worked up again. The house lights dimmed and were replaced by the stage's colored ones, and sure enough, the man of the hour came down the stairs wearing a denim jacket, black t-shirt, brown leather pants, and a big white cowboy hat. The rest of his band followed him, got behind their instruments and immediately launched into "Howard", which sounded heavy as hell. Without a break in the action, they whipped out "Castaway." The band was totally into it, and they sounded pretty tight. The setlist was basically the same as San Jose, just without the Skynyrd cover. The crowd energy was pretty good, whenever he noticed it begin to drop a little, Jerry would tell them to start making some noise. By the time he played the encores, everyone was singing along loudly and having a good time. Concerning the new album, all he mentioned was that it would be "available shortly". There were some photographers there, and popular radio station KROQ sent a van out there too. All in all, an excellent show, everyone got more than their money's worth, and if you ever get the chance to catch him live, don't miss out. P.S. That's a hot ticket, I can't believe how inexpensive they are. I'd've paid $100 for em. Hopefully, this tour keeps him in Cali a little while, most likely I'll be going to the Orange County show too. The new songs rip! Howard was my definite fave, along with Castaway, Spider Bite, and Angel Eyes. The crowd really got into Hellbound, though.--Charlie
