Show Review:

Henry:

Just a quick rundown of what pretty much seems to be the show of the year! (wadda ya mean it's only June?!)... Anyway, here goes...

As my car was going through one of its I'll-be-a-rebel-and-won't-do-what-ya-tell-me phases, I very unfortunately had to miss the better half of the opening set, which from what I gather, was a great performance by the Blues Crusher, a very exciting local band. Oh well, will just have to catch them next time. Anyway... Jerry came on shortly after...

And in what fucking fashion! Right that very second I realized that I was in for a treat. They started with No Excuses, and I had never realized the amount of "live power" that song possessed... what a FUCKING MONSTER! The crowd went pretty much insane. So did I. After that they went into a several songs off of Boggy Depot (Devil By My Side and My Song, I believe). Needless to say the experience was overwhelming.

After recovering from my initial shock (I had never seen Jerry live before), I then took some time to look around.

The club they were playing in was rather tight and VERY intimate, a perfect location for Jerry's opening show. The stage wasn't to spacey either, so the guys were sort of struggling around, watching how to avoid hitting each other. Most of the time Jerry was in the middle, Chris DeGarmo to the left Chris Dowd (the keyboardist) to the right, Nick Rhinehart somewhat in the middle of these three and Sean who, by the way, was in a top notch form. Not many complaints about the band as a unit either.

Anyway, after My Song came Satisfy (from what I recall) and I was really curious how would that song translate in a live situation and I have to admit that it came out better than I expected... one bunch of REALLY talented musicians. More Boggy songs followed with Brother and Them Bones (YEAH!) scattered in between. The band seemed to be in a great mood, doing their usual "funny-stuff" between the songs... just the way they played, you REALLY felt the contact! At one point during the show Jerry even let some guy up on the stage to propose to his girlfriend (aaawww) and... well, that kinda left the poor girl without much choice... smart guy :). After that, the band went into some technical difficulties (major feedback, some tuning problems) which in a way was great, because at this point I REALLY needed a breather. It was real fun to see Jerry kinda hopping around the stage with this confused face but I'm sure no one really minded (it's things like that that make a REAL *live* show). The first part of the show ended with Cut You In which, to me at least, sounded better than the album version. The band then got through the usual "thanks for coming out" stuff and left the stage.

For the encore they covered Pink Floyd's Brain Damage/Eclipse which I really did not expect, but considering how much I love that song it was a PERFECT ending to PERFECT night. I'm sure the summer arena shows will be nothing compared to what Jerry had to offer that night. ROCK FUCKING ON!
